Power Bar

“If we are successful, multiple ribbons can be directed into a quantum crystal gate to create a power array.”

Virginia

Ryan sat motionless, gazing out upon Eitchu from orbit. Memories and thoughts raced like banshees through his mind. The archives of his life brimmed over, and the stain of many memories spread like spatters of Cabernet across white linen.

Violet broke the silence. “Two hours remain until your meeting with Mehvis. Regarding the agenda, what are your additional thoughts?”

Ryan cocked his head and thought for a moment. “I think in light of our success with the quantum crystal gate, we should implement a system for Mehvis in case of trouble. I should think one gate at the office and another in the safe room of her residence should suffice.”

“Agreed. Where will the mirror half of the portals reside?”

“If she comes under attack, it may be coordinated with other public LUND installations. The gates should lead somewhere safe, unadvertised in our corporate directory, and somewhere that will be prepared.”

“Your logic suggests the Rex Talionis.”

“Yeah, for now, and I know what you’re gonna say next. I don’t like the idea of creating a doorway that could potentially expose us.”

“We would need to devise threat management procedures and mechanisms that would qualify the menace, authorize transfer, and ensure initial containment on this side of the gate.”

“What if in addition to biometric identification, we also required a keycode entry? If Mehvis utilized a certain digit anywhere in the code, it would indicate a hostage or hostile condition.”

“I am not entirely clear on the use of a specific digit.”

“Let’s say her normal escape code is 12345. If she’s being forced as a hostage, let’s have her indicate that with a zero. So for example, if she entered 012345, we would know she was being coerced. If someone was about to wheel a nuke through the portal, we could have her enter a nine. If she typed 912345, we would know an attack was coming. The use of a zero or a nine anywhere in her key code would notify special handling to us.”

“I understand, but the gate transfer is instantaneous.”

“True, but with a code, we could manage energy to the gate and build in a delay. If she entered a hostage code, we could pause energizing of the unit for a few seconds. We’d only need enough time to verify that the compartment on this side was secured. If she entered the code for imminent and overwhelming attack, we could disable the gate completely.”

“The plan is plausible, so long as Mehvis is compliant.”

“I don’t get the sense that she would be easily brainwashed. Something like that would take time to implement. Our protocols would identify it before she could act out. Also, I think we should implement a third concealed gate that I can use in case she indicates attack. We should power the third gate only from this side.” Ryan cocked his head for a moment and smiled. “Let’s embed the crystals into a certain piece of art and hang it in plain sight.
